Pinelo family says "Thank You"

Oscar Pinelo is an on/off resident of San Pedro whose kidney and liver functions have degenerated. Father of two, Pinelo is in dire need of constant medical attention and care. As many know, this does not come at a slight cost. Friends, family and loved ones are at a constant lack of finances in their attempt to assist Mr. Pinelo and see him back to health.

To help offset his medical expenses, the family and friends held a fundraiser this past Saturday at Cholo’s Sports Bar. The BBQ sale fundraiser was promoted constantly through the Reef Radio airwaves and was very successful.

The family of Oscar Pinelo would like to take this opportunity the give their heartfelt thanks to all the generous people that donated and showed up to give Oscar support, as well as The San Pedro Sun for allowing them to get the message across.

Meet Miss Panama: Marielena Gonzalez Peña for Costa Maya 2011

Marielena González Peña is Panama's representative, vying for the title of Reina de la Costa Maya 2011. Marielena is 22 years old, she is 5’5″ and her measurements are 36-25-35.

Marielena was born on September 12, 1988 in Havana Cuba, to a Cuban mother and Panamanian father. At 3 months, her family moved her to Panama City, along with her brother, father and mother.

She is a model and lawyer, two things she wanted to be from a very young age. Her modeling career began when she was only 15 years old and her first appearance was in 2004 for magazine, Ellas Teen for Felix B. Maduro. She’s also made commercials for Bellsouth, photography for Medcom, Samsung, Aurosport, and participated in the music video of national artist, Nigga (Dj Flex) in the song Sin Tu Amor.

In 2005, she won the titles of Miss Photogenic, Best Silhouette and Miss internet in the Miss Teen Panama 2006 Pageant. She also participated in the event, Estrelas del Alma, organized by Prestige Models. She took a modeling course from this agency and received the prize of best Runway Model in her graduation during the FashionExpo Show.

She is pursuing her degree in Law and Political Science from the Universidad Santa María la Antigua. In 2008 she obtained her broadcaster’s license from Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos.

In 2008, she joined the agency Physical Modelos. They helped her achieve her goals as a model and has appeared in Ad Campaigns for Digicel Carnavales, made the first editorial of the magazine Mia de la Estrella from Pamana and has appeared in T.V. commercials for Almacenes el Costo, Revista Mia, Cable Onda and Metromall verano 2011. She has also modeled for events like MacroFest & Fashion Week Panamá.

In 2009, she participated in Bellezas Panamá and received the prizes for Best Hair Style and Best Silhouette.

She was First Runner-Up in the most important pageant in her country, Miss Panama 2011. She represented La Provincia de Bocas del Toro.

She enjoys living her life one day at a time, enjoying each moment. She is always willing to help others and is part of the Asociación de Cubanos Residentes en Panamá and is the person in charge of the activities for the youths for this organization. She collaborated in the movement for the Juventud de Ogobsucun, a community in Kuna Yala that helps, feeds, educates and defends the rights of children. MORE

San Pedro NEMO holds Search and Rescue/First Aid Training

The San Pedro branch of National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is holding a Search and Rescue/Basic First Aid Training on Friday, July 1st. The training is being held with the objective to continue the preparation for the remaining hurricane season 2011. The training will be held at the San Pedro Town Council Conference Room commencing at 8:30 am.

The purpose of the training is four-fold: to enhance knowledge, skills and ability to better understand the importance of search and rescue; to train participants on how to conduct search and rescue; how to apply basic first aid on casualties and; the importance of search and rescue and basic first aid in the field before and after an emergency or disaster.

While the training is geared towards the emergency chairpersons and committee members, members of the general populace are welcome to attend. Belize Electricity Limited advises its customers in San Pedro Town that the supply of electricity will be temporarily interrupted from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011.

This 4-hour power outage will affect all of San Pedro Town.

BEL apologizes for the inconvenience caused, but this outage is necessary to facilitate maintenance works at the San Pedro Substation.

Coral Reef Ed-venture schools San Pedro’s kids on conservation

The Hol Chan Coral Reef Ed-Ventures is a children’s educational summer program in collaboration with Smiths College from Massachusetts, USA and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The program teaches children about reef ecology and conservation. The project started some 12 years ago as a result of professors from Smiths College who had been working in Belize on the Barrier Reef conducting various researches working with Hol Chan.In an effort to give back to the community, two of the professors, through working with Mr. Miguel Alamilla from Hol Chan, developed the program. Some 12 years ago, the camp started with an enrolment of about two students. This year, there have already been approximately 100 students who have signed up.
This week a team of five students from Smiths College are on the island for a six weeks stay. The program serves as a summer internship for the participating students. Prior to arriving on the island, the students have a week of preparation and come here for six weeks, one of which is used for research on the reef along with their professors. As part of their research, the students get to enjoy our barrier reef eco-system through scuba diving as they research the various fish species and their occurrence.
The summer program is divided into two parts. The youth camp is for students ages 9 – 12 while the advanced camp is for students 13 and over. Activities are scheduled to commence on July 4th through July 16th with a graduation ceremony at the Central Park on Thursday July 14th. Permission slips may be obtained by visiting the San Pedro Town Library or the Hol Chan Marine Reserve office.

San Pedro's 2011 Lobsterfest - "Party like a lob-Star"

Not even a quick downpour could stop the crowd from enjoying San Pedro’s 2011 Lobsterfest on June 25th. Gaily decorated booths served as shelter for the passing storm, and soon after, the music, food and enjoyment kicked off again. Hundreds of people came and went, sampling the many ways lobster had been prepared for their enjoyment. Each booth at the Central Park had their unique way of preparing the tasty crustacean. Special drinks like the Chocolate Lobster, which contained chunks of chocolate coated lobster at the bottom of a very delicious, creamy concoction kept crowds coming back for more. Grilled lobster tails, lobster hot dogs, lobster tamales and coconut curry lobster salad in a waffle ice cream cone – the variety of preparations were endless, and everyone indulged in the biggest celebration of the lobster.

2011 Tres Pescados Slam Tournament

This July 28th, 29th and 30th marks the 3rd annual Tres Pescados Slam Tournament to be held in San Pedro. The Tournament has become known internationally bringing the needed attention to Belize’s catch-and-release law for the tarpon, bonefish and permit which in turn brings fly fishing anglers all year to our waters trying for the coveted grand slam of all 3 fish in one day.

This year’s event includes the same wining formula as in past years with a new moon, great local fly fishing guides, one and two person angling teams, great location with award winning food and accommodations, a fly casting competition, and of course, the marvelous creatures that are only found together in a few spots on Earth with Belize being the best of those locations.

Wesnday, July 27th starts the event with the Casters Banquet being held at the Lion’s Den with all teams required to be represented to go over the rules and receive any last minute changes or updates. The San Pedro Lions have always put on a great banquet for us. Putting the money raised back into the community and providing ongoing protection of the sustainable income the 3 fish represent to San Pedro is a priority of the Tournament.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday (July 28-30) are the hard fishing days for the Pro Division competitors coming to town to team with the fly fishing guide they think will bring them to the Grand Champion win. We have 17 Pro teams entered consisting of one and two persons per team with most coming from the USA to compete for the title of Grand Champion of 2011. We have two women teams entered this year and many of the same faces from the teams of the past will compete once again this year.

The Amateur Division will once again be opened for all those wanting to compete without a guide and against the other amateur fly anglers entered. This division allows two person teams to compete for a split of 30% of the purse among the top 3 amateur winners.

The purse again this year will be $10,000 divided among the top winning spots. We hope to once again donate and equal amount of the money raised to the Conservation and Management of Sport Fish in Belize program designed to further the protection of this sustainable income producing resource.

The casting activities for the for the youth, men and women along with the kids mini-rod casting will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Central Park from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM each of those days. The kids casting with prizes will again be free for all kids.

Mark your calendars for July 28-30, 2011 for the 3rd Annual International Tres Pescados Slam Tournament and compete in the fishing, casting or bring the kids to cast the mini rods. Your help will keep the stainable income from these 3 fish here for generations.

Court of Appeal decision regarding Telemedia

Press Release - Saturday, June 25, 2011 - Belize Press Office - On Friday June 24, 2011 the Belize Court of Appeal ruled that the acquisition of Belize Te-lemedia Limited by the Government of Belize, is unconstitutional. As a consequence of that decision Mr Dean Boyce, one of the successful appellants, went to Telemedia's headquarters on St Thomas street in Belize City and purported to take back the company. Government then got immediate legal advice as to the full import and consequence of the Court of Appeal decision. On the basis of that advice Government concluded that it was not open, without more, to Mr Boyce to assume control of the company. The Court of Ap-peal judgment is declaratory in nature, and by itself does not deprive Government of its de facto possession of the company. For that to happen the appellant Boyce would have to go back to court for an enforcement order telling Government to give up possession. Gov-ernment thus instructed its appointee, the Executive Chairman and the Telemedia Board, to continue in command of the company unless presented with a court order specifically placing the appellant Boyce in control.

Government stresses that in resisting Mr Boyce government is acting strictly in accor-dance with the law. In fact It was Boyce and his lawyer who tried to circumvent the court processes by moving without the specifically required order. And government actually waited until it could be absolutely sure of its legal ground before it decided to resist Boyce.

Government also makes clear that it will fight any application for an enforcement order, and that it has several bases on which to do so. Government has also taken steps to ap-peal to the CCJ the Friday decision of the Court of Appeal. And regardless of the outcome of Boyce's application for an enforcement order, the appeal will be carried on.

The Government of Belize is naturally extremely disappointed at the ruling of the Court of Appeal. It is at a loss to understand how, in all the circumstances, the Court could have come to its decision, which has the effect of thwarting the will of the Belizean people as exercised by a sovereign Government. Nevertheless our system of democracy and rule of law is such that the decision must be respected, even as Government exercises all op-tions which that very rule of law gives to government.
Government also regrets the uncertainty that the legal developments have caused, espe-cially to the staff of Telemedia but also to the wider public. But Government will now use every recourse to preserve the status quo.

Finally, the Government of Belize thanks the Belizean people for what Government is cer-tain will be the continuing solidarity with, and support for, the entirely just and necessary struggle against Billionaire arrogance and disrespect for national pride and national sovereignty.

The fight will be carried on and one way or another Belize will prevail.

It was a very proud day for Principal Grace Williams and the staff and guests of Holy Cross Anglican School to see 20 of their students graduate on Sunday, July 19th. Staff, parents, honored guests and volunteers gathered to celebrate the success and perseverance of these students, some of whom had overcome great odds. Under the guidance of their teacher Mr Carlos Coba, 16 passed the PSE, and 7 earned scholarships to High School. Holy Cross wishes to thank all the many, many people who made this proud day possible. Mexican President meets with Belizean Prime Minister

As part of the International Conference to pledge Support for the Central America Security Strategy, held today in Guatemalan City, the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon met with the Prime Minister of Belize, Hon. Dean Barrow.

During the meeting, both leaders reiterated their commitment to advance bilateral cooperation in combating drug trafficking and organized crime. They expressed their intention to achieve greater synergies with the process of regional collaboration in this field.

The leaders discussed major bilateral issues of mutual interest, specially their concern to strengthen security along the common border and improve border infrastructure. Therefore, they agreed on the need to soon put into operation the new border crossing at the junction of “Subteniente Lopez 2” on the Mexican side and Santa Elena, Belize. The new border facilities will allow both countries to have greater control over the movement of people and goods in the Mexico-Belize border.

As per the energy power supplied by Mexico to Belize through the Federal Commission of Electricity (Comision Federal de Electricidad, CFE), President Calderon reiterated Prime Minister Barrow the Mexican Government’s commitment to identify options that will maintain the electricity supply, taking into consideration the current situation in Belize.

Lastly, both President Calderon and Prime Minister Barrow congratulated the President of Guatemala, Alvaro Colom for the fruitful Conference on Security in Central America, and the significant results achieved during the event in order to contribute to security in the region. President Calderon was accompanied by Mexican Foreign Secretary, Patricia Espinosa.

The Costa Maya Festival Committee is proud to present the Miss El Salvador contestant for Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant 2011. She is 20 year-old Andrea Bazant Sol from San Salvador, El Salvador.

Andrea is a student at the Monica Herra School of Communication, and she also speaks fluently in Spanish, English and French. Her hobbies include photography, Arabic dancing, design and art.
On August 5, 2011, she will join contestants from Belize, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica at the Miss Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant.

Be Kind Belize Holy Cross Anglican School Graduates

Thank you to the Community!

On Thursday the 15th of June 2011, Be Kind Belize was proud to celebrate the graduation of 24 children from Mr. Zetina’s Standard 2 at Holy Cross Anglican School. All of the students had successfully completed the Be Kind Belize programme.

Two students won additional accolades for being voted as the kindest kids in their class or by demonstrating generosity of spirit with their participation in the programme. Those children are Alhusaan Martin and Jennifer Neal.

Be Kind Belize was started in 2007 to offer humane education to primary schools in San Pedro and it is now being taught in the Cayo district as well. Humane education teaches children the meaning of kindness and empathy, gives them an understanding of responsibility and consequences and helps them to develop reverence and respect for all living things and the planet that we live on.

All of the Be Kind Belize, Kind Kid Winners received a fantastic selection of prizes, which were donated or sponsored. Many businesses and individuals deserve a huge thank you for supporting the programme and putting smiles on the faces of some very wonderful young people. The most exciting prize of all this year was full scholarships to San Pedro Summer Camp with a value of $600. San Pedro Summer Camp gives children the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities throughout the month of July. Be Kind Belize will be running a camp programme in association with San Pedro Summer Camp so there will be more fun with kindness this summer.

In particular, Be Kind Belize would like to thank Tammy Peterson from San Pedro Summer Camp, Marty Casado & AmbergrisCaye.com and Paradise Theatre. There were a number of other donors who contributed greatly to the prize packs that the children received and Be Kind Belize could not provide such wonderful motivators and rewards without their ongoing support. Belize Electricity Limited's (BEL) new Board of Directors convened its first meeting today at the BEL Corporate Headquarters in Belize City.

Mr. Jeffrey Locke has been appointed as the Company's new Chief Executive Officer.
The Board's first order of business was to meet with the managers of the Company to be updated on the current operations. This exercise is crucial to charting the way forward.

The Board is very encouraged by the commitment demonstrated by BEL's employees and management to support the Company's new leadership with its objective to ensure the continuity of quality power supply to Belize.

By 11:00pm, there was easily over 100 individuals had gathered to be part of Kama Lounge’s first Full Moon Party Bash Charity Event. Portion of the proceeds from drink sales of the night, will go towards Help Age Belize – towards the purchase of a new van.

Reports have reached The San Pedro Sun that one man, identified as Freddy Jaime, was shot shortly before 8pm tonight in the Sueño del Mar area, some ten plus miles north of San Pedro Town. Apparently the victim was shot twice in the upper left chest. The man is listed in critical condition and was emergency airlifted to Belize City for hospital care. We will post more reports as information becomes available.

Belizean students visit the Rights of the Child exhibition

Belmopan, Belize, 14 June 2011.- On June 13th and 14th, Belizean students visited the photo exhibition “Human Rights through your Eyes” at the Institute of Mexico in Belize. Children from 4th and 5th forms from Hummingbird School and Queen St. Baptist School visited this exhibition dedicated to the Rights of the Child. During the presentation the students interacted and discussed on their fundamental rights, including rights to adequate food, shelter, clean water, formal education, primary health care, leisure and recreation, cultural activities and information about their rights. They also received brochures provided by the UNICEF Belize Country Office with information regarding this topic.

The exhibition was part of the event "A Day for the Rights of the Child", organized by the Mexican Embassy in collaboration with specialists from the Human Rights Commission of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo late May. The event included various activities in Corozal District and Belize City. It was organised with the aim to raise awareness on human rights, especially of vulnerable groups such as children.

(Reuters) - FIFA has suspended Belize from international soccer with immediate effect because of "severe government interference."

World soccer'0s governing body said in a statement on Friday that its emergency committee had issued the ban.

It means the return leg of Belize's World Cup qualifier against Montserrat, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed.

Belize beat Montserrat 5-2 on Wednesday in the opening game of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Honorable Manuel Heredia donates to two San Pedro Institutions

On Thursday June 16^th, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation made two presentations of donations.

The first was in the form of cheque in the amount of $10,000.00, which was presented to the Marco Gonzalez Committee. This donation was accepted by Ms. Jan Brown, Chair for the Marco Gonzalez Archeological Site.

The second donation was in the form of Hygiene Products to the worth of approximately $3,500.00. The products are all from the Kimberly Clark Line.

NDACC reaches out to San Pedro’s addicts

The National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) now offers service to residents of San Pedro. While the service is offered sporadically, once or twice a month, it is yet another source of assistance for individuals at risk or suffering from drug abuse.

The San Pedro Sun spoke with Kristina Romero, drug educator for San Pedro and Caye Caulker. She informed us that the NDACC is an office under the Ministry of Health and deals with drug prevention education. “We have two units, we have the schools and community program, and that is the one that I fall under, as a drug educator. As part of my duties I go into schools to teach about the harmful effect of drug use, abuse or misuse of prescription drugs as well as legal and illegal drugs.”

While there is not a permanent office at the moment, Kristina visits the island once or twice a month for one to two weeks at a time. Apart from providing educational services to the schools, Kristina works hand in hand with their outreach case worker Joyce Ellis. Once an individual is identified as having a drug problem, that individual is referred to Joyce, who works closely with the addict and families in locating good rehab centers for them.

In San Pedro the officers work out of the San Pedro Town Council building, in a shared office with the Human Development Officer. There are plans in the near future to have a fully functional office here in San Pedro that will work with clients from both San Pedro and Caye Caulker.
Services offered by the office are completely free of cost and available to everyone. In Belize City, the office of the NDACC is located at #25 Amara Avenue and may be reached at 227-0528. While in San Pedro, Kristina may be contacted by dialing 607-0029.

Police Media Relations Workshop held

On Tuesday June 14, 2011, 30 Police Officers from Benque Viejo, San Ignacio and surrounding villages attended a Media Relations Workshop facilitated by the Ministry of Police and Public Safety and the Government Press Office. This is a country wide exercise that has since covered the Belize District and Belmopan. This workshop is being coordinated by the Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Police and Public Safety, Mr. Raphael Martinez and entails

The next workshop is scheduled for Orange Walk in July then proceeds to Dangriga, Punta Gorda and Corozal. Two People Injured in Boat Explosion in Caye Caulker

Two men were injured and remain hospitalized after their vessel exploded a short distance from the Caye Caulker Gas Depot yesterday afternoon. The two men are 33 year old boat captain Coronel Brown and 23 year old boat assistant Jairo Reyes. The 28 feet vessel is Royal Palm Kay and belongs to the Royal Palm Resort located off Saint George’s Caye. According to Police, the two men had just refueled the vessel and were heading to pick up their guest when the boat experience electrical problems and exploded.

As police noted, one of the men, namely Coronel Brown was seriously injured and is listed in a critical condition. Reyes, who is a resident of St. George’s Caye received lesser degree injuries but also remains hospitalize. The entire area remains blocked off as investigations continues.

Boat accident in Caye Caulker leaves 2 persons injured

The San Pedro Sun has has been able to confirm that there was an accident in Caye Caulker earlier this afternoon. Confirmed reports are that a vessel exploded in the vicinity of the Caye Caulker Gas Station, located at the Pelican Point Marina.

Unofficial reports are that while two individuals were injured, one individual has been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, in a critical condition, while the other remains on the scene.

The vessel reportedly came from St George's Caye to fill up with gas and had left the station when the explosion occurred.

The San Pedro Sun will continue to follow up on this story and report to you as the information becomes available.

Lobster Season 2011 begins

Great news for our many lobster lovers; visitors and locals alike; your wait is over. Lobster Season officially opened today June 15^th. A day very much anticipated by our many fishermen; saw fishermen up early in the morning racing out to lift their traps with the hope of bringing in the big catch.
Open season for lobsters in Belize is June 15 through February 15. Local resident Nestor Rivero informed The San Pedro Sun that this catch was much better than last year as they brought back more than 200 lbs of lobster tails today.

San Pedro Under 20 Football Team ties with Hattieville United

The San Pedro Under 20 Football Team (SPU20FT) went up against Hattieville United on Sunday June 12, 2011. This marked the second game in the 2011 Belize District Football Association (BDFA) under 20 regional games.

The game ended in a draw with both teams scoring one goal each. The first goal was scored by San Pedro’s Delmar Casey Jr. of the SPU20FT followed by Keaton Dyer scoring for Hattieville United less than twenty minutes afterwards. With supporters from both teams cheering their team, the game was a tight and very entertaining one.
The next game is scheduled for Saturday June 18^th when the boys will be travelling to Hattieville for a second match against Admiral Complex.

Island Icon Mike Gvara AKA "Island Dog" Passes Away

The San Pedro Sun has confirmed that long time island resident and artist Mike Gvara, fondly known as "Island Dog" was found deceased in his San Pedro home this evening.

According to friends, Mr. Gvara has been suffering from ill health and was last seen Saturday afternoon letting his dogs in. No foul play is suspected at this time.

For years The San Pedro Sun printed his amusing cartoons depicting the island life he had grown to love. He will be terribly missed and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

Man Found Deceased in DFC Area

Tonight word has reached The San Pedro Sun that the body of a man has been found in his home located in the DFC area. Although his identity has been confirmed, his name will not be released until family has been notified and the police investigate the scene. Foul play is not suspected at this time. The SPSUN will release the name of the deceased once all is clear with the officials.

Patty Arceo is new PUP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

Congratulations to Ana Patricia Arceo (also known as Patty Arceo) on her victory on Sunday, June 12, 2011. Patty garnered 950 votes total over opponents Ramon Reyes Jr. (258 votes) and Baldemar Graniel (187).

In an interview with Ms. Arceo during her campaign to get elected, she stated the following:

Government of Belize Announces Intent to Acquire Control of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL)

The Government of Belize (the “Government”) issued a media release on Friday, June 10, 2011 announcing the Government’s interest, “...in purchasing majority shares in BEL so as to assume control of the company.” No purchase proposal has been received by Fortis Inc. (“Fortis” or the “Corporation”) (TSX:FTS).

Fortis holds an approximate 70% ownership interest in BEL, an integrated electric utility and the principal distributor in Belize, Central America, following investment at the invitation of the Government in 1999. In addition to its investment in BEL, Fortis owns Belize Electric Company Limited (“BECOL”), a non-regulated hydroelectric generation business that operates three hydroelectric generating facilities in Belize.

In June 2008 the Public Utilities Commission of Belize (“PUC”) issued a rate order that has had a significant negative impact on the financial condition and operations of BEL. The order effectively disallowed the recovery of previously incurred fuel and purchased power costs in customer rates and set customer rates at a level that does not allow BEL to earn a fair and reasonable return. BEL appealed the PUC rate order to the Supreme Court of Belize.

On March 15, 2011, the court rendered its judgment dismissing BEL’s application and finding that, among other things, the generally accepted concept of Good Utility Practice is not applicable in Belize. BEL has appealed this judgment to the Court of Appeal of Belize; however, a hearing is not expected until the first quarter of 2012. On May 16, 2011, the Supreme Court of Belize granted BEL’s application to enjoin the PUC from engaging in any rate making proceedings or taking any enforcement or penal actions against BEL pending the appeal of its judgment. BEL has been in default of covenants under its long-term lending agreements since 2008 and has had no access to credit during this period.

As at March 31, 2011, the assets of BEL represented less than 2% of the total assets of Fortis; the combined assets of BEL and BECOL represented approximately 3% of the total assets of Fortis.

Stephanie Chi wins Be Kind Belize Speech Contest at Holy Cross

Be Kind Belize hosted a speech competition at Holy Cross Anglican School on Friday, June 10th.
Students from Standard II and III (Grade 4 & 5) filled the cafeteria hall to capacity and were on hand to witness the performance of four students. Each student had prepared a speech based on kindness, defining it, using examples of kindness, asking their peers what kind acts they’ve done, and as well, suggesting kind acts that the community can adapt as part of its daily routine.

Students sat and behaved marvelously while the speech contest was going on.

After two invited guests spoke to the gathered students (Barracuda Bikini's Celeste Pederson and Mary Gonzalez [Tia Chocolate]), was time for the prepared speeches. A very brave Jaaphet Castillo was called up first. After explaining the meaning of kindness, he pointed out the various examples of kindness as defined in the Bible, and while he stumbled a little, he remained calm and finished his speech to rousing applause. Following him was Aaliyah Roches, who recited a very sweet definition of kindness. Similarly, Rodell Mendez expounded on the issue of discrimination, threading his essay with a few touches of a poem on kindness.

However, it was Stephanie Chi who took the prize, as she gave an electric performance, asking her peers to be kind, giving examples and simply blowing the judges (Lion Members) away with her impassioned speech. After a few moments of deliberation, she was declared the winner of the grand prize: a brand new bicycle! Jaaphat, Aaliyah and Rodell did not go back to class empty-handed however, as they also each took $25 gift certificates. The bicycle was donated by a very generous Janice Feldman, while the gift certificates were donated by Marty Casado of www.ambergriscaye.com.

SP Captain Shark’s Veterans win big in Honduras

The San Pedro Captain Shark’s Veterans came back from a very successful away trip where they confronted two Honduran teams. From Thursday, May 26th to Monday, May 30th, the veterans were busy playing football in Puerto Cortez. The first game was against Equipo Municipalidad de Veterano de Puerto Cortez which ended in a 1-1 tie. The second game was against Municipalidad de Juveniles de Puerto Cortez, and this time, the San Pedro Veterans won BIG with a score of 4-1!

After such a successful showing, the team came back home and will be preparing to meet the Puerto Cortez for a sure-to-be exciting rematch on the island during the first weekend of July.

The San Pedro Veterans football club would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the following businesses that helped them on their recent visit: Pete’s Enterprises, Area Representative Mr. Manuel Heredia, Captain Shark’s, Cholo’s, and San Pedro Water Jets [for the fare special given to the players].

Changes in the Controlled Price of Flour

SPJC inaugurates Hon. Manuel Heredia Hall

The Hon. Manuel Heredia Hall was officially inaugurated on Thursday June 2nd. With its three classrooms, the facility will also provide extra space for the High School during the daytime. This came just under one year of the official ground breaking ceremony for the building.

Present for the ceremony were; Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation; Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education; Principal of San Pedro High School (SPHS) Mr. Emil R. Vasquez; Mr. R. Angel Nuñez, President of the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC); Mr. Gustavo Ellis, Dean, San Pedro Junior College; Mayor Elsa Paz, members of the media, other special invited guests and students.

After a welcome address by Mr. Vasquez, the ceremony continued with entertaining presentations by the new SPHS band, solo skit by Josie Lopez, a cultural presentation by Emily Gomez and Ismael Kay and other presentations.

Offering special addresses were guest speakers, Mr. R. Angel Nuñez, Hon. Patrick Faber and Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. After much entertainment and inspirational talks, Mr. R. Angel Nuñez and Mrs. Martha Guerrero had the distinct honor of unveiling the plaque. This was followed by the blessing of the new building by Rev. Fr. Daniel Lemence Nuñez and the cutting of the ribbon by Hon. Manuel Heredia, Hon. Patrick Faber and Miss. SPHS 2011-2012, Miss Miriam Rodriguez.

Located on the SPHS grounds, the facility came about through the joint efforts of Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. and President of the SPJC, Mr. Angel Nuñez, who lobbied for funding. Funding for the construction of the new structure was eventually secured through Grand Belizeans Estates Limited in exchange for a parcel of government land on Northern Ambergris Caye. The building was constructed at an estimated cost of $350,000.

Press Release - Belize Press Office, Belmopan - June 10, 2011 - The Hon. Prime Minister met today in his Belmopan Office with Mr. Lynn Young, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Belize Electricity Ltd (BEL) to discuss the current financial position of BEL.

Also present at the meeting were the Legal Counsel in the Ministry of Finance and the Financial Secretary.

The Prime Minister asked Mr. Young to convey to FORTIS INC., the majority shareholder in BEL, the Government’s interest in purchasing majority shares in BEL so as to assume control of the company.

Mr. Young undertook to immediately relay this message to FORTIS INC. and to convey their response as soon as possible.

In the meantime and in order to ensure an uninterrupted supply of power from CFE and other producers to BEL, and also to provide time for possible negotiations with FORTIS, the Government has agreed to pre-pay a further sum of BZ$4.0 million toward its future utility bills with BEL.

Four teams from two schools on Ambergris Caye travelled to Caye Caulker on Tuesday June 7^th. The teams travelled to compete against schools from Caye Caulker, for the Zone B elimination of the Primary Schools Football Tournament.

SPRCS Girls Team

While this leg of the competition is usually held in San Pedro, this year the four teams travelled to our sister island. With only two teams in the female division, SPRCS girls went up against NHAS girls. At the end of that game, the SPRCS girls were successful with a score of one to zero.

SPRCS’ boys first game was against the team from Caye Caulker which was a very tight game, ending in a penalty shot with San Pedro leading by one with a score of eight to seven. Game two for the SP boys saw them victorious over New Horizon boys’ team with a score of one to zero.

Both New Horizon’s Adventist School (NHAS) and San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) sent two teams; one male and one female team.

At the end of the elimination rounds for Zone B – the area encompassing San Pedro and Caye Caulker, it appears both teams representing the Zone are from SPRCS. The teams now prepare to travel to Belize City to the MCC grounds, where they go up against winners from the other zones in the Belize District for the District eliminations. This is scheduled for Wednesday June 15^th.

Morataya / Cabral leading in Beach Volleyball Competition

Beach volleyball has been a mainstay in San Pedro for decades. Now, Gustavo Morataya and Jason Cabral, both residents of San Pedro have quickly become two of Belize’s finest beach volleyball players. The two gentlemen are presently registered players of the Bulldog Team in the City of Belmopan Volleyball Association Open Competition.
The City of Belmopan Volleyball Association (CBVA) is an organized body with the mission statement: “The promotion and development of volleyball in Belmopan through various sporting activities, events, and programs”. The association is affiliated with the Belize Volleyball Association which is the organization responsible for hosting volleyball activities at the national level.

The CBVA is currently running an Open Volleyball Competition which includes a double round robin. The competition commenced on May 14th in Belmopan with an opening ceremony and guest speaker Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of Sports and will conclude on July 30th. Gustavo and Jason are playing in this competition.

The CBVA hosted its National Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament tour from March – May 2011. During this tournament, Jason and Gustavo traveled from San Pedro to Belize City to participate every weekend. The duo represented San Pedro proudly, and quickly moved up the ranks from new comers to ranking third. This tournament produced representatives for the International Beach Volleyball Competition.

In the International Beach Volleyball Competition the team moved from fourth place, to third place, to second place, and during the last stop they placed first. This they accomplished without support from San Pedro business or San Pedro fans. It is due to ONE point in the ranking that hindered these talented athletes from representing Belize internationally in the upcoming 2011 Central American Beach Volleyball Games.

Both Gustavo and Jason migrated to San Pedro over four years ago. On the island they both acquired jobs and quickly made San Pedro their home. As they travel and showcase their talents, they take with them the name of San Pedro proudly.

Through personal determination and their love for the sport, Gustavo and Jason have come a long way, and are in need of recognition for their skill of playing professional beach volleyball in Belize. With their skills San Pedro can be placed back on the map as it relates to beach volleyball.
In this competition the young men have had to travel to the capital city to compete during the weekends. With no financial assistance, this continues to be a very costly venture. For the remainder of the tournament, Gustavo and Jason will have to travel to the capital approximately ten times at an approximate total cost of $1440. This amount does not include accommodations or subsistence. The team will travel to Belmopan for their next competition on Saturday June 18th. With this said, they are seeking assistance from the general public, business community or individuals who would like to show their support for the sport of Beach Volleyball while representing San Pedro. SPRCS' Alessandra Gutierrez scores 4th highest in the PSE

For students in primary school, the culmination of their 8-year studies is the Primary School Examination (PSE). The years of study and hard work are tested with the PSE, and often, students find that they must prepare months in advance to do well.

This year, the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) is proud to name one of its own as the top 4th scorer in the entire country of Belize. Alessandra Gutierrez, daughter of Amparo and Oscar Gutierrez, and Standard 6 student at SPRCS managed to score a total of 368 points out of 400, or 92%. This score puts Alessandra in fourth place countrywide. Holy Redeemer Primary School’s Aliyah Marin topped the exams with a score of three hundred and eighty five points (96.25%). Placing second overall this year is Josette McGann of United Evergreen Primary with three hundred and seventy six points (94%) and Jordan Murrillo of Belize Elementary with three hundred and sixty nine points (92.25%).

At the SPRCS, there is much to celebrate, and according to Mrs. Roxanni Kay, everyone is very “happy and very proud [of all the students].” Of the 58 SPRCS students that sat the exam, 57 passed, making this year’s PSE another success story for the island’s largest, most populated school. Rounding out the top five were Jamie Valentine (87%), Rosanna Guerrero (86%), Jacqueline Hernandez (82.3%) and Xanairi Xiu (81.3%).

Study Tour of Belize

Press Release – San Pedro Town Council – May 31, 2011 – On Saturday 4th June a group of 12 emerging (future) leaders will arrive in Belize on AA 2103 to commence a Study Tour of Belize from June 4 – 8, 2011. The members of this group have been selected from several countries, including Canada, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.

During their visit they will be travelling to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Xunantunich, Spanish Lookout, Marie Sharp Fine Foods, Citrus Products of Belize, Belize Natural Energy and Belize Sugar Industry; they will also be addressed by a representative of the Banana Industry. These visits will serve as an opportunity for dialogue and for participants to be exposed to the diverse challenges faced by leaders in Belize. They will report on their experience in plenary sessions in Barbados at the end of the conference.

This is part of a unique experience and initiative entitled the Caribbean-Canada Emerging Leaders’ Dialogue (CCELD) which brings together 120 future leaders from Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean to participate in a two week, leadership development conference from May 28 to June 11, 2011 under the Theme: “Growth Through Connection – Enabling Sustainable Progress”. The CCELD opened in Ottawa, Canada on May 28 where they participated in discussions on the challenges facing leaders and engaged in two days of presentations, discussion and networking.

While this group is visiting with us here in Belize, five (5) Belizeans will be participating in other Study Tours in various Caribbean territories. The countries involved in this initiative include the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guyana, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Coral Reef Ed-Ventures is Returning to San Pedro

The Coral Reef Ed-Ventures is returning to San Pedro for its 12th terrific year of coral reef programs!

Smith College – Hol Chan Coral Reef Ed-Ventures is an educational summer program that teaches children about reef ecology and conservation. In 2000, three professors from Smith College, USA, Al Curran, Paulette Peckol, and Susan Etheredge collaborated with the managers of Hol Chan Marine Reserve, especially Miguel Alamilla, to create a program that provides a way for Smith students to give back to the community of San Pedro while supporting its beautiful resource of the coral reef. The goal of the program for the past ten years has been to foster collaboration between Smith students and the residents of San Pedro to promote an understanding about the environmental and economic benefits of a healthy reef ecosystem nearby, in the hopes of increasing the conservation of this remarkable resource.

This program has two programs for children who are interested in learning more about the coral reef. There is an advanced program for children ages 12 and over, who will create, with the Smith student teachers, a coral reef conservation project. For the past two years the group has published a magazine focusing on the Meso-American Barrier Reef nearby and its links to the community. The magazine printing was generously supported by community donations and was distributed free of charge throughout San Pedro. We will start on Thursday, June 23rd and ends on Friday, July 1st. The program runs from 4 to 6pm (Location TBA).

For children ages 7 to 11, there is a youth program that lasts for two weeks. It runs from Monday, July 4th to Thursday, July 14th. The children participate in many hands-on activities that emphasize the care and preservation of the reef. The program runs from 9:00 to 11:45 am at the RC School.

Interested students should pick up permission slips at the library (across from the RC School) or at the Hol Chan Office and bring it to the first day of the program. We hope you will join us on our coral reef adventure!!

Before the program officially gets underway, there will be two movie nights with popcorn and juice for anyone in the community who is interested. Be on the lookout for dates and times!

Legends Burger House Raises $4,000BZD for ACES Crocodile Conservation

Press Release – ACES/American Crocodile Education Sanctuary – May 31, 2011 – This past Saturday Legend’s Burger House was rock’n for crocs. Gino and the Shack Shakers entertained guests while they enjoyed pulled pork and chicken tacos and cocktails under the shade of a Belikin tent. The crocodile conservation display by ACES/ American Crocodile Education Sanctuary was educational as well as entertaining. Visitors marveled over the difference in skull sizes between the freshwater Morelet’s and the saltwater American crocs, and enjoyed watching both a photo gallery of ACES provided by The San Pedro Sun and a fantastically exciting video of ACES’s croc rescues and school visits which was created by Island Films.
Children took turns batting at a crocodile piñata made by Vince Rose, ACES croc wrangler and Wildlife Behaviorist, and Vince gave a live demonstration of how one of the croc traps works. After spending hours of preparation to set up the trap earlier that morning, it only took seconds once Vince crawled inside and pulled the bait for the net opening to be pulled tightly shut and raise high up into the tree, successfully capturing Vince. The crowd was impressed and delighted by the demonstration.
Tyler Cornell of Legend’s Burger House ingeniously helped ACES raise even more funds by giving away FREE rum drinks with the purchase of every $5 raffle ticket. Then, the raffle winners were drawn and 25 awesome prizes were handed out accordingly. As 6pm neared, people crowded the silent auction table to get in their last bids. As the sun set over the lagoon, silent auction winners were announced by ACES apprentice Chris Summers, and the winners received their prizes as the party dwindled down.

ACES would like to personally thank everyone who donated prizes for the day’s events and everyone that supported the cause by buying tickets or attending the festivities. “We are grateful to the whole community of this very special island. The generosity of everyone, from the band donating their time, to the San Pedro Town Council who permitted free bridge passes to those attending the event this is beyond what I ever could have imagined. We would especially like to thank Tyler Cornell, Jewels Von Rabenau and the staff at Legends Burger House for offering to host this event,” stated ACES Research Biologist Cherie Rose.

ACES will utilize the monies raised to continue building the new Educational Crocodile Eco-Sanctuary in Ladyville. Once the main facility is established and self-sustainable, it will give ACES the freedom to consider implementing a smaller croc sanctuary here on the island. And the biggest success of the fundraiser was that fun was had by all!

No Caye Caulker Lobsterfest for 2011

The San Pedro Sun was able to confirm that there will be NO Lobsterfest in Caye Caulker this year. This was necessary due to a decrease in support from the business community over the past years. The Lobsterfest Committee is a non-profit organization, and without the necessary support, the decision not to have a Lobsterfest was necessary. The main beneficiaries of Lobsterfest are the business community.

Our investigations further revealed that this is NOT the end of Lobsterfest for Caye Caulker. The team responsible for the event will be pounding the streets and working tirelessly immediately after the September Celebrations, preparing for Lobsterfest 2012.

With Lobsterfest not happening; you may ask, “What can we do in Caye Caulker instead?” Well, unconfirmed reports are that Lazy Lizard is planning a private Lobsterfest at The Split. Apart from that, Joanna Arellano, the Chairperson for the Caye Caulker Marketing Committee informed The San Pedro Sun that they have organized 2011’s Caye Caulker Cool Seafood Fiesta. The fiesta is scheduled to span two days, Friday June 24th and Saturday June 25th at the Central Park/Basketball Court. The event promises to be filled with music, fun games, lots of food and drinks. Times for the fiesta are Friday 12:00pm until and on Saturday 9:00am – 3:00pm.

Bees cause RC School Students to be evacuated

Students at the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) were seen walking in file formation heading out of their school grounds. But there was no special activity planned. The reason was BEES! At least one student was stung, leading to the evacuation of well over 800 students from the school compound.Staff from the nearby offices were evacuated as well.
School officials informed the public health department that bees were seen in the school compound, and when the relevant authorities arrived, they discovered the bee hive inside the space separating the first floor (public library) and the second floor (housing the BTB and the Minister of Tourism's Office) of the building located opposite the school.

According to San Pedro RC School Principal Roxanne Kay, it took the teachers about 20 minutes to get all 800 students off the compound to the central park.
While the bees are exterminated, a section of the street leading to the area is closed to the public.

How much is Your Pet Worth? – The True Value of Adoption

Aside from their traditional roles as guards, farm workers, hunters and companions – research shows that having a pet makes us healthier. Pet owners have better general health and lower blood pressure than non pet owners. Kids with pets in their home take fewer sick days from school and have better non verbal communication. Older pet owners are less lonely and more likely to be active if they own pets. Of course, human beings only receive these benefits if they are responsible pet owners.

This year SAGA has seen an increase in the number of pets that have been purchased at great cost to the owner, given up for adoption. Why would people spend hundreds of dollars on a dog, only to give it away to SAGA?
Many people will share stories of the local pot licker, its loyalty and good temperament with children. If the ‘pot licker’ were considered a breed, maybe it would have more value. Certainly, the Belizean pot licker is a unique dog and Belizeans should be proud to own one. But some people want something specific - such as a certain coat color or size - and so they go to pet shops or breeders to buy a pet off the shelf, in much the same way they’d buy a box of corn flakes. The big difference is that a healthy, well cared for pet can live for 14 years or longer. Pet ownership is a big commitment and should be taken especially seriously by parents wishing to teach their children about behaving responsibly.
The pets that are being given up to SAGA did nothing wrong except grow up. The cute little puppy that was purchased six months ago has turned into a demanding, large and active dog that needs training, exercise and company. Unfortunately, the people who purchased the puppy didn’t think it through and now there is an unhappy ending. The children are sad and feel like failures, the adults have lost several hundred, maybe thousands of dollars raising the puppy and the dog is homeless, no longer loved or wanted.

If you are considering getting a pet, try your local humane society first. In San Pedro, it’s SAGA. Pet ownership is not a decision to take lightly or to make on the spur of the moment. Holy Cross female football team get some gear!

Kelly and David Thompson from Kennesaw, Georgia USA recently made a large donation of football uniforms to the Holy Cross School of San Pedro. These efforts were fueled by their three children; Maggie, Will and Kayla who, while visiting, had joined the local children here to play a few friendly games of soccer.

Kelly’s kids all play organized sports were excited to find something they truly had in common with the local kids here, but could not help to notice the differences too. Seeing the kids playing barefoot with no uniforms, they came up with the idea of asking the parents of Kayla’s teammates to donate their used uniforms, cleats and balls to the schools here.

The Holy Cross Anglican School Girls Soccer Team was thrilled to try out their new soccer shirts. “I feel so professional”, says Heidy in Std VI (grade 8). Heidy loves playing soccer – “It’s fun, and I’ve made new friends”.

Mr. Coba, the Sports Director at the Holy Cross School, is also very grateful for the donation. “The uniforms really help, making the girls look and feel professional and it’s so much easier for everyone to know who is on which team. Having proper shoes is important too – many of the girls play with bare feet and they often cut their feet during the games”.

Kelly and David, who own a home here in San Pedro, hope to make this the first of many donations to the schools of Belize. By approaching other teams in the YMCA, they hope to get enough donations to provide full uniforms and equipment to all the children who want to participate in the sport and help build a league here on Ambergris Caye.

Both David and Kelly firmly believe that through organized team sports, children can thrive in all areas of life. “It helps build confidence in one’s self and trust in others when you are a part of a team that has one common goal and you learn to support each other. It is also an important lesson to teach our children and remind ourselves that collectively we can make a difference in the world,” commented Kelly.

San Pedro Under 20 Football Team ties with Complex Admiral

In the beginning of the Belize District Football Association (BDFA) 2011under 20 regional games commenced on Sunday May 29^th at the Ambergris Stadium. The first game of the season saW the San Pedro Under 20 Football Team (SPU20FT) going up against Complex Admiral of Belize City.

The afternoon football games started at 1:00pm with a preliminary game in which the SPFC’s under16 team going up against the San Pedro R.C. School team. This game ended with the SPU16 team victorious over the SPRCS team in a score of four to zero.

Commencing around 2:30pm the game between the SPU20FT and Complex Admiral was a tight one. At about 2:55pm the game was intensified when “Pinchy” from the home team managed to score the first goal of the game.

With supporters screaming and cheering their team on, shortly after, with the crowd’s support, San Pedro managed to launch a second goal around 3:05pm.

Shortly after, with the boys from the City intensifying their game, playing more aggressive, they managed to get their first goal in at around 3:23pm, just before half time.

The Island Academy hosts Pirate Party

With fun games, drinks, dancing and dinner for a whole fleet, The Island Academy welcomed festive attendees to their annual Pirate Party fundraiser! Featuring Poker, Roulette and Karaoke, Bingo, Chalupa, plus raffles and many other games, there was fun for everyone. Held as a fundraiser for the school, the Pirate Party was deemed a definite success.

Belize Joins International Sailing Federation

The Council of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has approved for the Belize Sailing Association (BzSA) to become a full Member National Authority of the world governing body for sailing. Belize has been allocated, by geographic location, to the Group O- which includes 24 countries of North and South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Belize now has full access to all benefits of membership including the ability to participate in global sailing events and utilize all ISAF services.

In 1996 the International Yacht Racing Union changed its name to the International Sailing Federation. The ISAF is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the governing body for sailing worldwide and is responsible to promote the sport of sailing internationally. ISAF website is: www.sailing.org.

Prior to 1870 individual yacht clubs developed their own set of rules creating confusion over different measurement standards. Consequently, sail boats from different countries could not compete on equal terms. In 1881 the Yacht Racing Association developed a set of rules for British waters. In 1906 the International Yacht Racing Union (IRYU) was formed by most European countries. By 1929 the North American Yacht Racing Union equally worded its rules and reached agreement that neither would change its rules without first informing the other. In 1960 a totally universal code of racing rules was agreed and implemented.

The Belize Sailing Association was formed on 17th February 2010 with aspirations to develop sailing as a sport in Belize and partaking in international events in due course. Two core projects to provide “meaningful activity” for youth and adults has been initiated as follows: Project Optimist for 9 to 14 year old boys and girls and; Grand Fleet Sailing for young adults and older to sail the traditional crafts unique to Belize such as the sand lighters, sailing dories and sloops.
The Optimist Project will be ready for launching in June in time for a Summer Camp program on Button Wood Bay. The Optimist is an internationally recognized class of sailboat designed for children and young adults. See www.optiworld.org.

On Saturday 28th May 2011, about 8:30 pm CIU Personnel conducted a search at a residence located at the corner of Consuelo and Peter Seco Streets, where escaped prisoner FABIAN BAIN aka CARLOS ESCALANTE was being housed. BAIN was found hiding inside the rear section of a two- storey concrete house at that location. BAIN displayed no resistance at the time and was detained and escorted to the Queen Street Police Station, where he now awaits charges.

The Art of Life - Authenticity

“Authenticity is the only solid position in hard times”

Natural wood is an art in Belize. Logging was a major trade in the country in the past and as you travel around and see the variety of trees, it’s easy to understand why. A wood carver’s and carpenter’s haven, real wood is a great pleasure and pastime for artisans in Belize. Over time, and facing the elements, real wood gets worn looking, but internally it has a solid strength and feel that make authentic wood a pleasure to have around.

In other parts of the world it is hard to find unique wood like Belize has. You can find a lot of fake wood though. They look nice, often pressed and glossy, over time they never seem to last, often, they crumble from the inside out.

Authenticity is not as easy to find when it comes to people, what is on the surface can be very deceiving. Making good business deals is an art and you need to take time to create solid results. Often times you need to look deeper to find how it’s all going to hold together. When we meet people we can be dazzled by shiny smiles, polished words and the promise of quick results, but like pressed wood that looks good, we need to temper all in the light of scrutiny for some time to see how they really hold up.

National Geographic Society funds to Develop the Santa Familia Primary School Forest Garden Känan K’aax

Strengthening our collaboration, Exploring Solutions Past: The Maya Forest Alliance of Santa Barbara California has joined with the El Pilar Forest Garden. Network of Santa Familia, Cayo, Belize to work in their beautiful and creative Maya forest garden named Känan K’aax, well tended garden in Mayan. This joint project has been enhanced this year with a grant from the National Geographic Society supporting the construction of a protective fence, outhouse, and galleria for school class assembly within the acre forest garden plot that the Santa Familia school administration set aside for the promotion of the model heritage conservation food forest.

The dream of the El Pilar Forest Garden Network began with the work on the school plot in 2008, clearing the untended bush within the school land. With their skillful eye to important trees, selecting plants and eliminating others, and considering planned reforestation, this noble group of traditional Maya forest gardeners demonstrates how they manage the forest as a garden. Their familiarity with the landscape gave them the advantage and only three years later the canopy is growing, food and herbs are flourishing, orchids are blooming, and life has thrived in the forest garden. With all this design as a hands-on teaching center, the group faced problems: horses were tromping in the garden; chickens were scavenging from the plants, while some people were throwing trash and others were plundering the garden.

Alcario Cano, the late president and true visionary of the project, lamented the lack of the fence to honor their remarkable efforts and to protect the site from marauders. He would be proud of the activity at the site now. It was on the hot afternoon of the 19^th of May when President Rusel Aldana and Anabel Ford proudly signed for the first installment of the funds that will realize the group’s plan of a garden teaching center for their community school children. The dry season has prolonged, and taking advantage the team will be busy over the next 6 weeks.

The Maya forest, once home to the ancient Maya civilization, provides a source to explore solutions past. Adapting to the changing conditions and managing with designs is a crucial requirement to meet both short-term and long-term development objectives in the past as for the future.

Research on the ancient Maya landscape reveals a new interpretation: The ancient Maya creativity resulting the the Maya forest garden. This was accomplished by intensifying an essentially skill based strategy of the Milpa Cycle, clearing and planting a maize field that managed with some 30 domesticated crops and more than a hundred volunteers that build towards a food forest.

The innovations of the El Pilar Program with its integrative and interdisciplinary vision for the role of the Institute of Archaeology's El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Maya Flora and Fauna for the Maya forest has taken the lessons learned and begun to apply it in the area.working with traditional Maya forest gardeners, we have learned together the inherent value of the time honored skills. The aim is to incorporate the forest garden practice as a landscape model for the ancient monuments of El Pilar.

Living in the forest and relying on its bounty, Ford gained admiration for the local knowledge of the Maya forest garden. As a follow-up to our earlier release in light of the disruption in the transportation system, the Ministry of Education and Youth hereby updates parents, guardians, students, principals and managements of schools of the following with respect to the scheduled CXC Examinations today:

1. Students taking CXC Examinations today should make the effort to reach their examination centers without taking undue personal risks.

2. The Ministry of Education and Youth has been advised by the Caribbean Examinations Council that scheduled examinations are to begin on-time for students who arrive on time at the examination centers.

3. Students who are delayed because of the transportation disruption are to still make every effort to reach the examination center without taking undue personal risks. Once at the center, students will be allowed to start the examination late and will be given full-time to complete the examination.

4. Where a student is unable to reach his/her examination centre because of the transportation disruption they are advised to go to the nearest examination centre with their registration information/documentation and where arrangements can be made for them to sit the examination at that center.

The Ministry will remain in contact with the Caribbean Examinations Council to inform them of any further developments and to get further guidance from them. We will advise students sitting examinations and schools accordingly.

As we get such feedback from CXC we will be making a public announcement via the radio stations. ACES at Isla Bonita

Cherie and Vince Rose of ACES (American Crocodile Education Sanctuary) were back at it on Thursday May 19th, imparting information about the American Crocodiles. This time around, the students of Isla Bonita Elementary School received the opportunity to acquire education, ask questions, and even touch one of the oldest animals in the world, dating back to the Dinosaur Age.

Cricel Castillo to represent Belize in Miss America Latina 2011

Miss Castillo will be competing with 27 other countries' Latina delegates for the title/crown of Miss America Latina 2011-2012. Miss Colombia is the current Miss America Latina 2010-2011.

New immigration law takes effect in Mexico

A new immigration law took effect in Mexico on Tuesday aimed at better protection of undocumented migrants passing through Mexican territory on their way to the United States.
The new law will permit undocumented migrants to obtain a special visa when entering Mexico from either Guatemala or Belize and tries to enact reforms in the country's immigration ministry, which has been implicated as complicit in criminal acts such as kidnapping migrants.

"Today, Mexico is doing its part to improve the immigration system in North America," President Felipe Calderon said during a ceremony in which he signed the law. "This, without doubt, is advanced legislation, bold legislation, immigration legislation with few precedents in the world," he said.

Migrants have been attacked and kidnapped in increasing numbers in Mexico. The National Human Rights Commission has reported that 11,333 migrants were abducted by criminal groups, including Los Zetas, during a six-month survey period in 2010.

Measles Outbreak Prevention in Belize

Press Release – Ministry of Health, Belmopan - May 25, 2011 - The Ministry of Health notifies the general public that an outbreak of Measles is ongoing in 33 different countries in Europe and transmission has been reported in 5 countries in the Americas. The last cases of measles in Belize were reported in 1991.

Measles is a very contagious disease caused by an infection with the measles virus. Transmission of the virus occurs through unprotected coughing and sneezing of an infected person. A single case of this virus can cause an epidemic among unvaccinated persons. Signs and symptoms of Measles infection include:

- Fever - Rash - Cough - Runny nose (coryza) OR - Red eyes (conjunctivitis)

All persons, especially young children, who have not been vaccinated against measles are asked to contact the nearest public health center during normal working hours.

Travelers going to or coming from Europe, North, Central and South America are advised to review their immunization status and to seek measles vaccine if unvaccinated.

The general public is urged to immediately report signs and symptoms of this disease to community health nurses in the districts or to public health personnel at the Ministry of Health.

Caye Caulker Sewage Needs Assessment

Press Release – Belize Press Office –May 24, 2011 – The Department of the Environment will be hosting another public consultation this Thursday, May 26, 2010 at the Caye Caulker Community Centre starting at 7:00 pm.

The primary objectives of the project are:

1. To investigate the waste management practices of the residents of Caye Caulker for the collection and treatment of sewage in Caye Caulker within the framework of the Land Based Sources of Marine Pollution Protocol of the Cartagena Convention (LBS Protocol).
2. To investigate the possible contamination of Caye Caulker’s ground and surface waters resulting from the current sewage waste management practices by undertaking an in depth water quality monitoring programme.
3. To investigate the current use of ground water resources in Caye Caulker to determine the potential impacts to human health.
4. To consolidate the recommendations of prior studies conducted in Caye Caulker and formulate new recommendations taking into account the realities of Caye Caulker, the new information collected and noting the recent passage of Effluent Limitations (Amendment) Regulations in line with the LBS Protocol.

Over the past year, the DOE has been sending out personnel to Caye Caulker on a regular basis to conduct water quality monitoring of both groundwater and sea water at pre-established monitoring sites. The DOE has conducted a public consultation as well as a survey to further the overall goal of the project in working towards recommendations for proper waste management in Caye Caulker.

In July 2009, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, through the Department of the Environment (DOE), embarked on a Sewage Needs Assessment Project for Caye Caulker to investigate the waste management practices of the residents of Caye Caulker and determine the extent of contamination of ground and surface waters from these waste disposal practices. All residents of Caye Caulker are invited to come out and learn more about the project.

Art of life: Is it worth it?

We create our own traps in life. We suffer in occupations we don t like, incompatible friendships, places we don’t want to be in. We can suffer in abusive relationships wishing that the abuser will change. “if only he stopped drinking, if only she would do as I say, I will leave once the children grows up, I can’t survive without his money,” and on and on.. The excuses continue. It sometimes takes drastic measures for people to wake up and take charge of their lives. It takes courage to strike out on your own-you might fail, but you can also make a better life for yourself. Either way you will gain new experiences.

When you are not happy with your life, it’s important to take steps to correct the situation. It might not happen quickly but it’s well worth the effort. By just striving we become happier than if we had made no attempt at all. Making changes for a healthier life for ourselves and the ones we care for, is not always easy. But when we are suffering in a household of unhappiness it’s time to ask the question, “Is it worth it?” the days are long but the years are short. Life is happening now. When you plan to make changes now for your happiness you don’t need to count on happiness that is (or isn’t) waiting in your future.

Never overestimate your ability to change people and never underestimate your ability to change yourself for the better.

Brandi Mermaid at Capricorn Resort

“Brandi Mermaid, Belize’s First Real Mermaid” was at Capricorn on Friday May 13^th and The San Pedro Sun was invited to view her in action.

Dressed in her very realistic mermaid tail, Brandi became the serving platter for countless sushi rolls. Visitors were invited to sip of some wine as they enjoyed sushi off the mermaid’s body. Education Period celebrated

Education Period 2011 was observed across the country from May 3^rd through May 15, 2011. Throughout the two-week span, several activities were organized across the country under the theme “Education empowers: Creating change, nurturing minds, embracing the future."

During that period, the Ministry of Education (MOE) conducted several activities to highlight some of its accomplishments and the accomplishments of teachers. This year, the MOE focused on increasing public awareness as it relates to such issues as quality child friendly schools, secondary school refinancing reform and teacher education to name a few.

In San Pedro, there were a couple of activities which included an Ecumenical service held on Tuesday, May 3^rd. After the service, it was time for sports. For this event, two locations hosted: San Pedro High School (SPHS) and the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS). On Thursday May 5^th, all Ministry officials went into schools in their respective areas and taught lessons, in an effort to connect directly with teachers and students. Ministry officials visited three schools here in San Pedro; New Horizon SDA, St. Peter’s Elementary and San Pedro High School.

On Wednesday, May 11^th, a Festival of Arts was held at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium (Read more on Page 1 & 4). The following day, teachers along with nurses were invited to enjoy the annual party hosted for them by the San Pedro Town Council and Area Representative.

Friday May 13, 2011, was a day to celebrate Teachers’ Day. On this day, activities, trips, fun events take place that help to build staff relations. All across the country, teachers enjoy a day of fun. We join the rest of the community and country in saying Happy Teachers’ Day, and thank you for all you do!

Rachelle Wintzen gives Modern Hip Hop Dance Classes

On Wednesday May 18th, Rachelle Wintzen was at the Train Station, where she presented two classes to students of various ages in the art of modern hip hop dances.

All attendants were dressed for the occasion, each individually expressing themselves through fashion and dance.

This is the first in a series of classes that Ms. Wintzen hopes to be giving on the island. Look in next week's paper for a full introduction as well as availability and classes that she hopes to provide.

Counterfeit $100.00 bills confiscated and some remain on the market

On Thursday, May 19^th, 2011 about 2:00pm Police on mobile patrol on West Collet Canal in Belize City conducted a search at #59 West Collet Canal, the residence of David Sedacey. A search conducted on Sedacey resulted in the discovery of a transparent plastic bag with two amounts of $100.00US notes that appeared not to be genuine. A search of the house and the premises yielded nothing illegal. David Sedacey was cautioned and escorted to the Queen Street Police Station along with the counterfeit notes.

There were (37) $100.00 US notes with S/N FF58641474B, (36) $100.00US notes with S/N FF80216340B, (38) $100.00US notes with S/N FJ34448254A, (39) $100.00US notes with S/N FLO34944321C all to a total of (150) $100.00US. Police formally arrested and charged David Sedasey, 35yrs, laborer of #59 West Collet Canal for the offence of Possession of counterfeit notes.

Whitey Feels Mighty - Even Dogs Forgive and Forget

Press Release – SAGA Society – May 17, 2011 – Whitey is a friendly and playful young dog, so little did he know when two big, strong muscular dogs approached him one day that they didn’t want to play. They attacked Whitey viciously, leaving him with deep puncture wounds to his face and his throat ripped open. When the two big dogs finished with him, they left him in the street to die.

Luckily for Whitey, some wonderful people found him barely clinging on to life in the gutter. They rushed him to SAGA, where the staff members were shocked to see the horrific wounds and terrible trauma caused to this poor sweet dog. Whitey’s trusting but frightened eyes made the SAGA team even more determined to save him.

Whitey was given love, healthy food, a great deal of veterinary care and a new lease on life by the fantastic SAGA staff. SAGA pays for all of the medical care and treatment for dogs like Whitey and can’t do that without the generous help of the public.

Whitey not only survived but now he is ‘fighting fit’. You’d think that Whitey would want to get back at the bullies who nearly killed him but Whitey is a lover and not a fighter. He loves other dogs and cats and his idea of a great day out is a romp on the beach. He’s a happy and loyal dog thought to be a Labrador mix of some sort, about 2 years old and looking for a home where he can live happily ever after.

Come and see Whitey and his friends at SAGA Humane Society. They say a house is not a home without a good dog and a dog with such a big heart will fill your home with joy and love. Whitey may have forgiven his attackers, but only a loving and permanent home will help him to forget that he was abandoned to die in the most horrible way.

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia Commemorated May 17th, 2011

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality as a mental illness. On May 17th, 1990 the World Health Organization declared that “Homosexuality was not a disease.” The declaration date is now commemorated as the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Homophobia and Transphobia is about an extreme and irrational aversion to gay man and Transgender persons. These issues remains invisible for the society, because it is assumes gay and transgender individuals are not assaulted, abused or arrested indiscriminately as a matter of state policy.

The case of Jose Garcia in 2009 highlights how discrimination can occur. The recent experience of another Belizean, Mia Quetzal, in Trinidad highlights, how symbols of the state can abuse their authority. Preliminary results from a transgender study in Belize done by The Caribbean Trans in Action (CRTA), tells us that 78% of trans people do not believe the laws protect them and close to 90% of men who have sex with men population from a field data report collected by UNIBAM in 2010-11, did not believe they could trust law enforcement to provide equal treatment under the law. State policy does not officially oppress, but in practice, a minority of state symbols has had a history of abusing their authority in the name of the state against LGBT persons knowing that the individual would not formally complaint.

Homophobia and Transphobia, is usually experience more intimately, in verbal abuse among peers, intimidation by neighbors, threats of violence in simply taking a seat on a bus, co-workers and family members isolation, denial of shelter, employment and lost of education. These experiences go unnoticed, because it is not reported.

The pass media editorials and articles have sought to perpetuate fear-mongering, rather than to educate. It is time for a change. As Belizeans we demand equal protection, and fair treatment. This is not controversial as Belizean lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender have the same expectations. When a LGBT person cannot get a job, walk on the street and get an education this is not controversial for we all expect the same thing. We are one in human dignity and rights.
